Islamey, An Oriental Fantasy, Op. 18, is a notoriously difficult piece,
dedicated to Nikolai Rubinstein, and
at one time said to be the most difficult ever composed; Ravel was said to have
composed his Gaspard de la Nuit specifically to be harder to play, and
Scriabin to have damaged his hand trying to practise it.
Composed in 1869, it is in three sections; the first, Allegro agitato
is based on a Circassian folk tune, the second is slower and comes from the
Crimea, then the first tune returns. Sequenced from the PDF available on IMSLP. | |||
