International Music Score Library Project [IMSLP] entry: Jacques Blumenthal
Jacques (or Jakob) Blumenthal [1829-1908] was born in Hamburg, Germany, but studied in Paris and settled in London, where in 1848 he became pianist to Queen Victoria. He thereby became much in demand in society. He is best known for his piano pieces, but his songs were also popular at one time.

La Pensée is No. 5 of Blumenthal's
Fleurs Emblematiques, his Op. 21, which IMSLP dates to 1851.

The piece is dedicated to Miss Marshall. Sequenced in 2024 from my copy, privately bound into a collection of salon music. As far as I can see, the only important differences between my copy and that at IMSLP are some minor changes in pedalling. There are some printed lines heading the score, here reproduced exactly as printed: Embleme: Souvenir expressif. Le parfum de l'ame, c'est Le souvenir George Sand. (Lettres d'un vayageur.) The second line is a well-known quote (The perfume of the soul is remembrance.) from George Sand, perhaps best-known today as the lover of Chopin. The piece is marked Moderato, with a subsidiary indication La melodie legato et l'accompagnement staccato, The result is an unusual jaunty sentimentality. | |||
