Daphne is marked Allegretto grazioso. The slight hesitations
when the tune comes in are as marked in my copy, but not in the only copy I
could find on the Web; I imagine they are intended to reflect the character
of the eponymous young lady, who seems to be unknown to the wider world
[unless there is a reference in his biography?]. I have sequenced this
slightly slower than Phillip Sear on YouTube; matter of taste! Sequenced mainly in 2014 from my copy in The Music Lovers' Portfolio of the World's Best Music, edited by Landon Ronald, part 2. Daphne is Copyright MCMXVIII, several years before the Portfolio. But the list of Dunhill's works says that this piece, which has no opus number, was published in an unknown magazine; perhaps this is it! Dunhill served in WW1, in the `Artists' Rifles', so should have been too busy to compose and publish in 1918? Or perhaps there were quiet moments. | |||
