I have selected six short pieces from the 32 Floetenuhrstuecke (Pieces for Musical Clock) that Haydn wrote. They were not composed for a music box or anything similar, but for a flute organ driven by clockwork. The clocks survive, giving a wealth of information about the intended performance. The pieces date from 1789-1793. I have scored them here for recorder, as the nearest in Midi to an 18thC flute sound, and removed all dynamics.
Sequenced largely from the (complete) IMSLP version, but with reference also to the selection in the ABRSM edition, and compared also with recordings and copies in my collection. The IMSLP version is from Nagels Verlag, Kassel, ed. Ernst Fritz Schmid, 1931, 1954; the Associated Board of the RSM version was edited by Lionel Salter, 1982. The pieces are:
1. Der Kaffeeklatsch (Coffee party), IMSLP 18, ABRSM 4, Hob XIX6; transcribed from the finale of H's baryton trio #76. The name is not from H but from the clock owners.
2. IMSLP 15, ABRSM 2, Hob XIX3; based on the second movement of H's Symphony #13, L'Imperiale.
3. IMSLP 10; the accelerando is reasonably authentic.
4. IMSLP 13, ABRSM 1, Hob XIX1; taken from an aria in H's opera Il mondo della luna.
5. IMSLP 25, ABRSM 14, Hob XIX25; a march written by H for Prince Esterhazy's grenadiers. For sequencing, this is written in double notes at double speed.
6. IMSLP 30; note the similarity to the famous Gypsy rondo.
