| Si Oiseau J'Etais | MIDI | piano salon CD1 | |
|
The piece is headed by the couplet Si Oiseau J'Etais, A Toi Je Volerais
("If I were a bird, I would fly to you").
The score is marked Con Leggierezza quasi zeffiroso.
It is a study, Op 2 no 6, in sixths, dating from 1837-38. I have at least four copies of this, all with a number of errors and other differences. I have silently corrected the errors, and also made occasional stylistic choices -- eg, which chords to arpeggiate, and also some perhaps tied notes. I have left some genuine alternative notes as a silent ossia in the MIDI version. Sequenced around 2000, revised 2010 for our CD Christmas card.
| A la Fontaine de Potsdam | MIDI | piano | |
|
A La Fontaine de Potsdam is subtitled 2nd Nocturno, and
is the second of two nocturnes Op 6, dated 1839.
It is marked Moderato and marcato il canto, with the
left hand also marked sempre legato. Sequenced in 2021 from the 6th Star Folio [Paxton, undated]. There is indeed a well-known fountain in Potsdam [near Berlin], the capital and largest city of Brandenberg; it is in the Sanssouci Palace. Frederick the Great had trouble getting it built -- it was supposed to be 100 feet high --, and called in Euler to help with the engineering; but ignored the advice he received and blamed Euler when the leather pipes didn't work.
| Liebeslied | MIDI | piano salon | |
|
Liebeslied, or Song of Love, is number 11 of the
Etudes de Salon, Op 5, published in 1838.
The indication is Allegretto sostenuto e amoroso. The piece is dedicated to Queen Marie of Saxony, which I would have thought a little presumptuous! Sequenced in 2022 from the version in the Sixth Star Folio [Paxton, undated]. I have several other copies, which differ significantly in the details.
