Zampa, ou la Fiancee de Marbre (Zampa, or the Statue Bride)
is a comic opera, basically a pastiche of Mozart's Don Giovanni.
The Overture has retained its popularity, and is Herold's best-known work,
apart perhaps from the ballet La Fille mal garde.
It was composed in 1831. Here it is arranged for two pianos, eight hands, giving a very rich piano texture to the piece. The arrangement is by Friedrich Lux, published by Schott & Co., and largely sequenced in 2014 from the public-domain IMSLP version. I have also compared with a piano solo version by G. F. West, which has many more dynamics, much less pedalling, and a few corrected notes. I have incorporated much of this. But there is still far too much pedal for my personal taste. I have taken the liberty of introducing a bell for the clock, and a clarinet for the slower tune in the middle. | |||
