Lefebure-Wely, Louis James Alfred

International Music Score Library Project [IMSLP] entry: Louis James Alfred Lefebure-Wely

Alfred Lefebure-Wely [1817-1869] was a virtuoso French organist and composer, mostly for piano and organ. He specialised in exploiting the grandest new Cavaille-Coll organs. He scandalised critics by preferring showmanship to serious religious works. Most of L-W's music proved ephemeral. There are some quite fun salon pieces for piano, as well as for organ, and these show up in Star Folios and the like.

This is the first Grand Sortie from L-W's L'Organiste moderne -- 2me Livraison.
Sequenced from the version on IMSLP, occasional mistakes corrected. This is one of his show pieces. Accordingly, I have taken it at a reasonable gallop, rather than the somewhat plodding version of most (but not all) available versions. Indeed, performances on the web vary in length by well over a minute.
The principal direction is Allegro moderato. The various slowings down and speedings up are as marked, as is the staccato right hand. The left hand and pedals are rather "oom-pah", which again seems to be what L-W intended.
