The Primrose is piece #CCLXXI of the
Fitzwilliam
Virginal Book, the principal source of Peerson's few extant
keyboard pieces. It depicts Spring in two sections, each with a variation.
There is a corresponding Autumn piece immediately after it in the FWVB,
see below. Sequencing mostly done in 1995 from my Dover edition of the FWVB. | |||

The Fall of the Leafe is piece #CCLXXII of the FWVB, see above,
immediately following The Primerose. It depicts Autumn in two sections, each with a variation. See also, above, the corresponding Spring piece immediately before it in the FWVB. Sequencing mostly done in 1995 from my Dover edition of the FWVB. These two pieces are rather early examples of character pieces, depicting in sound the nature of the seasons. | |||
