This Ballad is an arrangement by Brinley Richards of an 1856 song
composed by the little-known English composer William Thomas Wrighton
(1816-1880) to words by Joseph Edwards Carpenter (1813-1885).
The song is a well-known piece of Victoriana, with many recordings
and versions on the web; this arrangement is somewhat less well known. It is marked Moderato -- con Espressione. As you might expect, it's not entirely a jolly song: 'Tis years since last we met, and we may not meet again; I have struggled to forget, but that struggle was in vain. But at least she may still be alive. | |||
