Marche Militaire No. 1, D. 733, arranged by Carl Tausig (1841-1871). Tausig was perhaps Liszt's most famous pupil and a virtuoso pianist, but died young, of typhoid. His widow survived for a further 60 years!
This well-known Marche Militaire is usually seen in reasonably simple versions [originally a piano duet], or arranged for orchestra/band. Tausig pulls it around a bit, and ups the twiddly-bittage. The ending is perhaps a little weak, but the middle section is rather good. The first section starts out very quiet, but there is a very long, very gradual crescendo, presumably intended to represent marching soldiers coming closer.
Marked Allegro vivace. The edition in my collection, published by Bosworth & Co, London, is somewhat sketchy in details; eg it has no pedalling [which I've added in moderation]. The staccato indications are also rather inconsistent, but here I've followed the score.
IMSLP has a probably earlier edition of this; the printing is better than in my copy, but I didn't spot any differences. In particular all the potential typos seem to be the same, so either they are intended by Tausig or else they have been copied. IMSLP also has a piano duet version; much the same notes spread over two more staves!
