International Music Score Library Project [IMSLP] entry: George F. West
George Frederick West (~1812 - ~1897) was an English organist, pianist and a prolific composer and arranger of salon music. Little seems to be known about his life. I have several of his pieces in my collection

Der Lustige Bauer (The Joyful Peasant) is described on the
title page as a Melody by Schumann
transcribed for the Piano-forte by George F. West.
The Melody is, of course, Schumann's
Fröhlicher Landmann, von der Arbeit zurückkehrend
(Merry Peasant, returning from work) from his
Album für die Jugend (Album for the Young), Op. 68, No. 10.
West's piece is undated, but I'd guess it was composed very soon
after Schumann's [1848], before the peasant became universally known
in English as Merry rather than Joyful. Sequenced in 2025 from a copy in my collection, published by Robert Cocks & Co., and dedicated to the pupils of J. Marsden, Esq. There is an allegro introduction, followed by the theme, which is marked allegretto. then there are two variations, one with an arpeggio accompaniment, the other a march. West marks the pedalling, the staccato notes, the emphases and the phrasing very precisely [perhaps for the benefit of Mr Marsden's pupils], so I've followed that. There is little grey in the piece; some quiet bits, some loud bits, nothing between, and finishing with some very loud bits and some very, very loud bits! | |||
