Salon Music

A collection of music, mostly for solo piano, from the Victorian era, intended for performance in the home or at intimate concerts. The pieces are often showy and/or sentimental, as befitted the taste of the era. They vary widely in difficulty, but were intended to be within the capabilities of amateur pianists, such as were to be found in many, perhaps even most, homes. This was a time before radio and TV, even before gramophones, so entertainment had to be found within the home, and almost inevitably around the ubiquitous piano.
