2019 Christmas Cards
Artwork

The piece of artwork we settled on from our sheet music collection is shown below. It appears to be unsigned, so unfortunately we have no information about the artist. The picture reflects the story of the music itself which has a sleigh ride to a party and back. A group of people are shown travelling in horse-drawn sleighs, the central sleigh being pulled by three horses.

The first piece of added artwork is the painting A Troika Ride Through The Snow by Nikolai Sverchkov:

Although the Russian troika with the shaft-bow harness (large wooden bow over the yolk of the central horse) is quite different from the three-horse sleigh in the music picture, the artist is known for his beautifully-depicted horses and the speed and fun of the ride are so well captured that we felt this painting added the feel of an exciting sleigh ride to our card.

Next, we needed a picture of a party. As the music features parts for children, we wanted a piece of artwork that featured children at a party, preferably at Christmas.

The picture we chose is a G. Hever and Kirmje woodcut-engraved print of a picture that has music playing, children and a Christmas tree, so it ticked all our boxes. There is no separate artist's signature, so we are not sure where the original artwork came from, but this print was published as a double-page spread in an 1886 issue of the pictorial magazine, Die Gartenlaube, so perhaps the magazine would have credited the artist:

For the final image, we wanted another sleigh ride for the ride home after the party. This time, we particularly wanted to feature children in the sleigh. This illustration by G. A. Harker from a childrens' book of 1906, The Brookes Primer, seemed to fit the bill:

As mentioned earlier, the music is from our private collection and is old enough to be out of copyright. The additional images are all downloaded from Wikimedia Commons and are widely believed to be in the public domain. Please click their images above for further information.
